Central Alaska Network

Overview

The Central Alaska Vital Signs Network (CAKN) includes three national park units in Alaska: Denali National Park and Preserve, Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve, and Yukon Charley Rivers National Preserve. Denali is a Class I air quality area, receiving the highest protection under the Clean Air Act. The other park units are Class II air quality areas. Wet and dry atmospheric deposition, ozone, and visibility are monitored at Denali; visibility monitoring is also conducted at nearby Trapper Creek, and wet deposition is monitored at Poker Creek. Information on air quality and related issues in Denali can be found on the ARIS Denali website. The other two park units have no air quality monitoring, and there is no other air quality monitoring in central Alaska. Because of the lack of monitoring sites, it was not possible to estimate air quality conditions for Wrangell-St. Elias and Yukon-Charley Rivers or complete an ozone risk assessment.

The Network map below provides information on air quality monitoring. Ozone, sulfur dioxide, dry deposition, and meteorology are collected by the Clean Air Status and Trends (CASTNet) and Gaseous Pollutant Monitoring (GPMN) networks. Ozone is also monitored with passive samplers and portable continuous analyzers. Wet Deposition is monitored through cooperation with National Atmospheric Deposition Program/National Trends Network (NADP/NTN). Visibility is monitored as part of the Interagency Monitoring of Protected Visual Environments (IMPROVE). Additional details on these parameters are described in Air Quality Monitoring.

Air quality monitoring in or near the network is indicated on the map by symbols, with the blue line showing the approximate borders of the network. The legend shows the symbols for the type of monitoring present, with NPS park units in green. The Class I area has linkable access to ARIS information.
