Mud, sand, and other sediments at Earth’s surface form strata (layers) of sedimentary rocks. The layers of sediments are deposited in many environments including oceans, rivers, and deserts.
As layer-upon-layer of sand and mud become buried, the weight of additional, overlying material compresses the mud and sand to form solid rock.
Because sedimentary rocks begin to form at Earth’s surface, they are indicators of ancient landscapes.
